What is the Doc Society Climate Story Fund?

The Doc Society Climate Story Fund is on a mission to support impactful storytelling and innovative strategies that empower audiences to envision and actively contribute to a just transition. This fund prioritizes projects that explore communities experimenting with new pathways for a safer and more just future, governments and civil society countering the fossil fuel industry’s efforts, and leaders committed to repairing past harms.

Funding Opportunities:

The fund provides grants of up to $150,000 to support the completion of production for creative nonfiction projects. Additionally, it offers funding for impact pilots related to completed creative nonfiction and fiction projects. Applicants can request up to $100,000 USD in grant funding.

Application Requirements:

  • All projects must have a climate theme and a clear intention to implement impact activities.
  • While impact expertise is not a prerequisite, an openness to the idea is encouraged.
  • Production projects must be completed within a year from the grant award, and impact projects must implement a pilot within the same timeframe.
  • Sample materials in languages other than English must have English subtitles.
  • Budgets must be submitted in US dollars.

Selection Criteria:

The selection process will prioritize:

  1. Stories that help audiences envision the just transition.
  2. Climate stories that center the most affected, unengaged, and underrepresented communities.
  3. Storytellers working in and from those communities, amplifying narratives that resonate with new and unengaged audiences.
  4. Projects that embody inclusion and diversity across team and subject matter.
  5. Responsible practices when engaging with story participants and communities.

Who Can Apply?

  • Applicants and projects from around the world are welcome.
  • Both new and established artists are encouraged to apply.
  • Creative nonfiction projects, including documentaries, podcasts, and radio documentaries in production.
  • Completed creative nonfiction and fiction projects seeking to implement an impact pilot.
